Hips and valleys with uneven roof pitches

Background

When Craig Kearney Roofing received the drawings for this arts and crafts self build project, he knew it would be tricky.  The two main roof pitches differed by about 10 degrees and additionally there were eaves sprockets which would result in curved valley and hip lines.  

Challenge

Many roofers might have suggested using third round ridges instead of traditional bonnet hips and mitring the valleys, but Craig relishes a challenge and was keen to achieve a finish using just traditional fittings.

"I feel the fundamentals of roofing are quite basic," explains Craig, "a simple set of rules but rules that can be bent.  We used split batten to support the head of the valley tiles on the lower pitches which made the sit somewhat acceptable on the varying pitches, once we had established  the valleys would accept the fittings it was simply a matter of closing the gauge on the steeper side so it all coursed through."

Result

Dark Heather Rustic tiles were used on this project together with matching traditional bonnet hip and valley fittings despite the differing pitches.  Half round ridges create the apex with a fleur de lys finial adding the final ridge detail.
