When HS2 announced their new high speed rail route would bisect the course of the 130 year old member-owned Whittington Golf Club near Lichfield, the club realised they needed to make some major changes to its layout.  To preserve this historic club, one of the oldest in the country, much of the course was redesigned and BHB Architects were appointed to design a new club house. 

It was important to take careful environmental and social consideration of this sensitive site and the Architects used Arts and Craft styling to link the old course to the new and to relate the new building to the established neighbouring military barracks.  “The use of Dreadnought plain Staffordshire blue clay roof tiles with their natural shade variations for this sizeable roof was a key element in helping to achieve planning permission and in blending the building into its sensitive green belt environment,” explains Toby Hindle from Brownhill Hayward Brown Architects.

The project is a low carbon design and has achieved a BREEAM excellent rating.  It has also been shortlisted in the 2022 Pitched Roofing Awards.
